Why is choosing carefully more important in Glendale than most places?

Why the wavelength question is the one that matters most
Laser hair removal works by selective photothermolysis: melanin in the hair absorbs light, converts it to heat, and the heat disables the follicle.
The problem on darker skin is that the epidermis holds melanin too. Older strongly melanin-absorbed wavelengths (ruby, and alexandrite alone at aggressive settings) could not reliably distinguish pigment in the hair from pigment in the skin, which is where burns, hypopigmentation, and hyperpigmentation came from.
The 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength is widely considered safe across Fitzpatrick IV to VI because it penetrates past the epidermis and delivers its energy at follicle depth. Longer pulse widths and active cooling reduce epidermal heating further, and published protocols exist for dialing fluence and cooling by skin type.

What to do before your first session
Stop waxing and plucking. The follicle has to be present for the laser to target it, so shaving is the only hair removal method to use in the weeks beforehand.
Stay out of the sun and off tanning beds and self-tanner. A fresh tan raises epidermal melanin and changes the safety calculation, which is why sessions get postponed rather than pushed through.
